Zak Starkey
Zak Starkey was born on 13th September 1965 in London. He is the son of the The Beatles legendary drummer Richard Starkey, or more commonly known as Ringo Starr. He was the drummer for the British rock band Oasis till 2008 and has also been associated with another legendary British icon “The Who” since the 90’s.
Zak’s interest in music was evident since his childhood days and his talent was widely appreciated but his father Ringo whenever he was inquired about his son’s future and whether he wanted him to follow his footsteps in music his answer was “I won’t let Zak be a drummer”.
Zak was early inspired by Alice Cooper and Bowie. His dad’s friends included the likes of John Entwistle, Dr. John and Keith Moon who was also his godfather since Zak’s parents had separated and divorced when he was only 9 years old.
Keith had also presented Zak his first drum kit and was his teacher and mentor since his childhood. By the time he became 12 he had already started playing in the pubs and so in his teens Zak became a member of the band named ‘The Next’ which later evolved to Monopacific. And at the age of 12 he joined his first professional studio “The Spencers Davis Group” as a drummer.
Zak’s fulfilled his cherished dream when he joined The Who in 1996. He was warmly received by the rock industry and managed to gather favorable reviews for his talent and drumming skills. In 2004 he joined Oasis, another rock icon, after the departure of their drummist Alan White though he participated in every tour of Oasis during 2005/06 yet he never officially joined ‘Oasis’ although he was formally requested by the other members. Zak left Oasis in 2008 and has since concentrated more with his cherished band The Who. He also has toured and performed with the The Lightening Seeds and is also one of the founding member of Johnny Marr & The Healers.
