Shohreh Aghdashloo

Shohreh Aghdashloo will be awarded The WIFTS Foundation Humanitarian Award today. Shohreh Aghdashloo is activist who has worked for more than thirty years to bring attention of the world towards the plight of women in Iran. She immigrated to London in seventies and began her career as an actor. Her movie, “The House of Sand and Fog” won her Oscar nomination. Shohreh Aghdashloo won an Emmy Award for 2009 for her performance in miniseries,” House of Saddam” by HBO.

Shohreh Aghdashloo remained dedicated to the social issues like life of women in Iran. Her dedication brought her into the eyes of Cyrus Nowrasteh, the director of “The Stoning of Soraya M”. Shohreh Aghdashloo was offered the role of “Zahra-the voice of justice” in the movie. The Stoning of Soraya M was released in last summer. Her role and performance along with her dedication towards the cause brought her into the attention of organizations like Moral Courage and Vital Voices.

Based on a hard to believe true story, the movie tells the tale of a village woman who is persecuted despite being innocent. The woman becomes an epitome of courage and inspiration living in a mob-ruled village. Betsy Nowrasteh wrote the story for the film; Cyrus directed it while Shohreh Aghdashloo starred as Zahra.

The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase will bestow the award to Shohreh Aghdashloo for using her art to bring about a change. The award will be an acknowledgement of Shohreh Aghdashloo’s determination and dedication for the cause of up lift of women in the world especially in Iran.
