Remember Remember The 5th Of November
We celebrate an English tradition recognized as Guy Fawkes with fireworks and bonfires, every year on 5th November. The origins of Guy Fawkes tradition rooted from some special events that occurred in 1605 when a group of twelve persons tried to destroy Britain’s House of Parliament. This issue or matter was to become known as the Gunpowder Plot the man behind the event was Guy Fawkes.
Conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot showed aggressive action to end the harassment and discrimination of the British Catholics. They planned to kill the King and others authorities responsible for the discrimination by exploding the Houses of Parliament. However king came to know about the conspiracy and in the early hours of 5th November, the plan was made unsuccessful. About the story, Guy Fawkes was taken into custody with approximately 36 barrels and was sentenced to death.
English people were encouraged to celebrate the event on November 5 and to light bonfires to the King’s escape from killing. The tradition continues till to-day on the same night every year and a statue or dummy of Fawkes is burnt and bonfire is lit.
Another beautiful tradition of the day is “a penny for a guy” where children and young people beg for money for the guy who will be fired late night. The money is consequently used for fireworks.
