Punxsutawney Phil 2010
Isn’t it ridiculous that in the age of touch technology and ‘Avatars’, we’re using groundhogs like Punxsutawney Phil to make weather predictions? It’s funny to see that some club members are bringing out an animal to forecast weather. It’s 2010 and it’s high time to burry such traditions!
Who’s Punxsutawney Phil anyway?
Punxsutawney Phil is a groundhog, which could be called the most famous groundhog of North America, and which is being used by Punxsutawney Groundhog Club members on the Groundhog Day to predict weather. According to the Punxsutawney groundhog club website, Phil has made a prediction for the winter 2010 that it will last for six more weeks!
According to the website this prediction was made as Punxsutawney Phil saw its shadow on the morning of February 2. According to the folklore, if the groundhog casts a shadow on February 2 (also the Christian holiday Candlemas) it means that spring will not come anytime soon but if no shadow is seen it means that there will be an early spring. Phil’s 2010 prediction is that Spring will not come until next six weeks.
Groundhog Day 2010 and the Predictions
Punxsutawney wasn’t the only place and Punxsutawney Phil wasn’t the only groundhog which was used to make predictions for the 2010 winter. At many places on the American continent, locals celebrated Groundhog Day 2010 to watch winter predictions. Among the popular ones Punxsutawney Phil, Wiarton Willie, and Shubenacadie Sam are the three groundhogs which are making ‘headlines’ all over the internet for their predictions for winter 2010.
Readers, do you believe in this local folklore? Give us your opinion about making weather forecasts using Punxsutawney Phil and other groundhogs. Should we stop celebrating it or should we continue this tradition?
