Poveglia Island is exactly located in between Lido and Venice. A beautiful slim canal bifurcate the island into two parts. It is worth watching but now it is closed for the visitors and tourists. Although it is one of the beautiful piece of land on the ocean but the history of Poveglia is not at all beautiful.
Poveglia was considered as the best place to isolate the large number of victims of Plague. The Plague is the disease caused by enterobacteria Yersinia pestis. It is a kind of infectious disease caused by the rats. In the Roman time, thousands of people suffered from Plague and they were kept at Poveglia Island, and thousands died by this deadly infection.
This Island was also used as a plague-pit for three times when the deaths were all around Europe. Keeping the infected people at Poveglia was considered the best way to minimize the damages by residing them separate from the healthy people. According to the statistics over 150,000 people died at this Island.
Later in 1922, a mental hospital was also built there at Poveglia Island and it was reported that a mental doctor committed suicide after killing many of Hospital’s patients.
The island was also used by a small community during the war of Chioggia between Genoa and Venice till the war ended in 1380.
Now days the island has been utilized for farming and public entry is not allowed.
