Lillian Hellman
Lillian Hellman was born Lillian Florence Hellman on 20th June 1905. The American playwright had been linked to many leftist causes through her life. She has had been involved with Dasheill Hammett for 30 years. She was the inspiration of the mystery and crime writer’s famous character Nora Charles. Lillian Hellman was also a long time friend of Dorothy Parker.
Lillian Hellman died of natural causes in 1984 at Martha’s Vineyard.
Lillian Hellman’s upbringing in New Orleans-Louisian in a Jewish family cast long lasting effect on her writings. Lillian Hillman has had to spend half of the year during her childhood in New Orleans and half of the yea in New York with her aunts in a boarding house that was run by her aunts.
Lillian Hellman’s famous works include The Little Foxes, Toys in the Attic and The Children’s Hour. She was fond of introducing younger characters in her plays.
Lillian Hellman also wrote autobiographical memoirs. An Unfinished Woman: A Memoir, Pentimento and Scoundrel Time. Julia was based on Pentimento.
