6th January, 2001: George W. Bush was declared the U.S. President
On January 6, 2001, George W. Bush was declared the winner of the presidential election after a week-long debate over the Florida voting. President George W. Bush won the election in one of the closest races in U.S. history. His presidency was inaugurated on January 20, 2001.
6th January, 1996: One of the Biggest Winter Storms Hit East Coast
East Coast experienced one of the worst winter storms of U.S history on 6th January, 1996 and in many areas up to 20 inches of snow fell in just one day. The heavy snow fall caused travelling impossible. Schools and offices were closed for more than a week. Even federal government announced office closings for a week.
6th January, 1983: President Reagan Proposed Increment in Gas Taxes.
With the intention of using the additional money for national highways and roads, US President Ronald Reagan proposed increment in gas taxes. The increment still remains a hot issue.
6th January, 1933: U.S. President Calvin Coolidge Passed Away
The 30th U.S. President, Calvin Coolidge, died of heart attack at his home. He was 60 years old.
6th January, 1919: U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt Died.
U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt passed away at his home in Long Island, New York. President Roosevelt was the youngest U.S. president when he took over the office.
International Events
6th January 2000: A Major Flu Virus Outbreak in United Kingdom
The major flu outbreak forced numerous hospitals to cancel every non-emergency surgical operation. The flu outbreak caused health problems in a large number of people and many hospitals got short of beds in ICU sections.
6th January, 1995: Philippines
A building caught fire due to chemicals. When the fire fighters arrived at the scene, their investigation led to discovery of massive terrorism plan. The scheme was named Project Bojinka and it involved a terrorism plan to blow up 11 planes and their 4,000 passengers. It also included a plot to murder Pope John Paul II and an attack on CIA HQs in Virginia.
