Martin Luther King, Jr. day is celebrated today in America. A holiday is held yearly, on the third Monday of January in the honor of famous activist and great leader in the American human right movement.

Martin Luther King, Jr. had a remarkable and strong effect on American history. He was born on January 15, 1929 but MLK Day is not celebrated exactly on his birthday but around the day of his birth.

This day celebrated for Martin Luther King Jr is one out of four federal holidays of United States, celebrated in the recognition of a person. The first holiday as a national celebration in the remembrance of great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. took place on January 20, 1986.

King is esteemed for his fabulously delivered speech “I Have a Dream” in his March on Washington. With his zealous and effective speech, he raised general awareness about the civil rights among public in his movement and acknowledged himself as one of the greatest public speaker in U.S. history.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his struggle

to cease racial segregation and racial favoritism and prejudice through social rebelliousness and other peaceful and passive means. He concentrated his efforts to lessen poverty and opposing the Vietnam War both from social and religious point of view.

He was killed in 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee and after his death he was awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. He has become a legacy American history. Happy MLK Day to all Americans.
