Every one of us has seen the connotation, today in the history of world. Almost every one of us ignores this connotation appearing in newspapers, on website pages or running as a strip on our television sets. Few are the days which are awaited long for and Guy Fawkes Day is one of those days.
Fifth of November which is the day associated with Guy Fawkes Day. When the Guy Fawkes masks sprung on toy shops and departmental stores, parents come to know that Guy Fawkes Day is approaching. Few of us have the knowledge of the event or the history behind the mask that was beautifully sported by V in Alan Moore’s “V for Vendetta”.
Few of us know that Guy Fawkes was the man who tried to assassinate King James I, and blow up the Parliament House in 1605. The failed conspiracy of Guy Fawkes is known as Gun Powder Plot. Many of us have listened to the traditional rhyme, “God save the king!” but few of us have the full understanding of the events which lead to recitation of this traditional rhyme. Guy Fawkes was the conspirator of the gunpowder plot whose conspiracy was foiled in some way and he was tortured and killed in January 1606.
Burning the guy in effigy has become a part and parcel of Bonfire Night, but few know that the effigy is of Guy Fawkes. The children make an effigy of Guy Fawkes and parade it down streets. They asked passers by, “spare a penny for the Guy”, the money thus accumulated is used to buy fireworks and to burn the effigy on bonfire.
Next time you encounter November 5th, remember it is Guy Fawkes Day.
