Bea Arthur donates $300,000 to gay youth
Ali Forney Center’s Executive Director, Carl Siciliano expressed his gratitude over the donation and says he is overwhelmed by the bigheartedness of the actress. He says the center provides home to more than 1,000 gay youth every year who are forced to leave their homes ‘for being who they really are’. Siciliano says that for last few months he was finding it hard to make the ends meet.
He said that he was trying real hard to keep it going but was finding problems due to lack of finances. But this Tuesday when the FedEx courier service handed over a $300,000 check to him, he knew that the center will not see a bad time now. He says that the donations came when he needed it the most and ‘couldn’t have come at a better time.’
Carl Siciliano says he knew about the donation but wasn’t sure of the amount. Bea Arthur had a connection with the center dates back to 2005 when a set designer requested her to help the center grow. She came on board and made theatrical tours to raise money for the center. She also raised the issue of homeless gay youth in media through her interviews.
Carl says that with the donation he will buy a new residency to provide shelter to 12 people and would name it after the lady who made it possible.
