Asian Carp

Asian Carp is vicious species of fish. Asian Carp has been categorized in four groups; bighead, silver, black and grass. Asian Carp take more than 40 per cent of their body weight plankton daily which leaves other aqua life at stake. Asian Carp could grow 5 feet long. It can weigh up to 80 pounds.

Asian Carp touched the waters of southern United States in 70s. They were primarily imported to keep clean the retention ponds and wastewater treatments facilities. The great floods of 1990s caused the escape of this specie into Missouri and Mississippi River.

Asian Carp becomes problem for they produce their off springs so quickly that soon they out numbered the rest of the native species. They have made havoc in Illinois River by getting its number up to 90 percent of the total aqua life in the river.

If Great Lakes are invaded by Asian Carp, the water temperature and food abundance will soon make them the majority in the absence of any predator and then it will be not possible for the authorities to control over the breed of Asian Carp.

The DNA found by the scientists suggests that the fish has come very near to the Lake Michigan which gives strength to the suggestion that they might have breached the $9 million barrier and are ready to invade the ecosystem of the Great lakes and to jeopardize a $7 million sport of fishery.

Maj. Gen. John Peabody of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said that although the fish is yet to be detected in the dangerous area and if the fish crosses the navigational lock too, the invasion could not be said inevitable.
