Abby Sunderland
Abby Sunderland, 16, sets off to discover the horizon on her own.
In her 40 feet long sail boat, Abby Sunderland will be ailing alone in the blue waters. There will be no siblings or friends with whom Abby Sunderland could go to have coffee to warm her up, there won’t be any home-made meals for Abby Sunderland; with dried food and water-maker she’ll be on her own during this treacherous sea voyage.
Her parents, friends, and family said her goodbye on Saturday afternoon. From now on they will not be able to see Abby Sunderland for five months, and there is a possibility that she might not be able to return home safely.
When asked what has driven her to start such a dangerous journey, Abby Sunderland said that kids wanted to become doctor and firefighters, she wanted to do something and seeing her older brother returning after a successful tour, she realized that something are possible.
Abby Sunderland’s younger brother, Zac Sunderland, has completed a world tour in 13 months by sailing through his boat. He completed his tour at the age of 17 and is the youngest American to sail around the world.
